Have you ever been in a situation where you have to do something, but you keep procrastinating because you really dislike doing it?
We all have tasks that we dread doing. Whether it is creating a strategic plan, sending CVs to apply for a job, taking an exam, or cleaning the house, there are things in life that can be difficult and unpleasant. But, rather than avoiding these tasks altogether and keep procrastinating, it is important to learn how to push through them in order to reach our goals. So how do you push through procrastination? Here are 3 actionable steps to beat procrastination:
1. Take the first step.
What?! Yes it’s not a typo. As boring as it sounds, we all know that the first step is always the hardest. But once we took that first step, the rest will fall into place. By just focusing your mind on taking the first step, you create the momentum of getting started. Thereafter, just tell yourself to focus on the second step. And then the third step. This will build on the momentum and soon enough you’ll start rolling and get on fire. Chances are, you’ll be more likely to keep going when you see that you’ve made some progress.2. What is your big “Why”
One of the best ways to stay motivated and persevere during difficult tasks is to know your big “why” – the reason why this task matters so much in the long run. Ask yourself questions such as: “What will happen if I complete this task?” or “What will I gain by pushing through this painful situation?” By focusing on what you can gain in the future rather than the pain in the present moment, you can become more motivated and find strength to beat procrastination.3. Make it fun.
Our brain doesn’t like discomfort and wants to avoid pain. Hence, the one way you can trick your brain is to make it fun. Ask yourself: “ How can I make this task fun and easier to complete?” Eg. If you have a health goal, what’s the first small step that you can take? Perhaps drinking 1.5 litre of water a day? Make it easy by keeping the water at the working table where you work. Make it fun by having a competition with your kids? Give yourself a fun reward for each task completed? What else can you think of?Conclusion:
For now, just DO these 3 practical steps. I don’t want to bombard you with too many steps because I don’t want you to procrastinate on them 🙂 I also know that if you just do these first 3 step, it will move you forward towards achieving your goals. Don’t shy away from procrastinating, beat it so that you can reach success sooner rather than later! Keep pushing through those tough times – one day they won’t seem so daunting after all! All the best and may you achieve your goal this year. P.S. And if you ever feel like you’d like to hold my hands to turn 2023 into an amazing year of growth and transformation with you, let’s talk.
