The Importance of Gratitude and Our Well Being
Why it’s important to practise gratitude?
Gratitude – It is so simple, yet its value is undermined. I caught myself in distress, dissatisfaction and worry when I focused on what was lacking? What’s not good enough? What was wrong? When I’m grateful, I see the world as beautiful, wonderful, and it keeps me joyful. What about you? Have you been in a constant state of gratitude this year?
The Science of Gratitude.
In 2003, Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., and Michael E. McCullough, Ph.D., published a study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology that found grateful people are more likely to have higher levels of well-being.
From this study, we also know that gratitude influences our moods and overall health—both physically and mentally. Other studies have found that gratitude improves sleep quality and quantity as well as reduces inflammation (a marker of stress in the body). All amazing things come from feeling gratitude!
How to Cultivate Gratitude?
So now we know how beneficial gratitude can be to our overall lives… but how do we actually go about feeling it more often?
- Start with practicing mindfulness — be present in the moment and truly experience all that is around you without letting your brain wander elsewhere.
- Another great way to boost feelings of gratitude is by starting a gratitude journal and writing down three things each day that you are thankful for (big or small).
- Surround yourself with positive people who will help remind you how blessed you are when you might be feeling low. You got this!
Take some time out of your day to really reflect on all that you are grateful for — I promise you it will make a world of difference. From better physical health to increased mental well-being, there are so many benefits that come from feeling thankful.
Make an effort to be present, write down what you’re grateful for each day, and surround yourself with positive people… soon enough you’ll find yourself feeling more grateful than ever before!
